Happy Health: Skin Cancer - If You Can Spot It, You Can Stop It!

Living with skin cancer has not been easy. Through doctors visits, various treatments and trying to prevent future melanoma; skin cancer sure has sent not only myself but my family on a roller-coaster (I will sure keep you all posted.) As a nurse I want to inform you to keep you and your loved ones safe and perhaps be able to prevent this from happening to you or someone that you love.

From the Skin Cancer Foundation -
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, afflicting more than two million Americans each year, a number that is rising rapidly. With the exception of breast cancer, it is the most common cancer for people age 39 years old and younger. It is also the easiest to cure, if diagnosed and treated early. When allowed to progress (metastisize), however, skin cancer can result in disfigurement and even death.

You should perform self skin check exams and coupled with yearly skin exams by a doctor. Self-exams are the best way to ensure that you don't become a statistic in the battle against skin cancer. (This is how I found mine.)
Performed regularly (at least once a month), self-examination can alert you to changes in your skin and aid in the early detection of skin cancer. It should be done often enough to become a habit, but not so often as to feel like a bother. For most people, once a month is ideal, but ask your doctor if you should do more frequent checks.You may find it helpful to have a doctor do a full-body exam first, to assure you that any existing spots, freckles, or moles are normal or treat any that may not be. After the first few times, self-examination should take no more than 10 minutes — a small investment in what could be a life-saving procedure.

There are three main types of skin cancer; basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a doctor right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin (Dermatologist.)

The Warning Signs of Skin Cancer Are:

A skin growth that increases in size and appears pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black, or multicolored.
A mole, birthmark, beauty mark, or any brown spot that: changes in color, increases in size or thickness, changes in texture, or is irregular in shape where the outline is bigger than 6mm or 1/4" (about the size of a pencil eraser.)
A new spot that appears after age 21 years of age.
A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode, or bleed An open sore that does not heal within three weeks

Like with any disease prevention is the key! About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Since its inception in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 or higher (everyday, including in the Winter and Fall) as an important part of a complete sun protection regimen.
Sunscreen alone is not enough however; seek the shade (especially between 10 AM and 4 PM,) do not sun burn, avoid tanning and UV tanning booths, cover up with clothing,( including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses,) for extended outdoor activity - apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating,) and keep newborns out of the sun and sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.

Like awesome, like wow, like totally freak me out, I mean right on... go Hubby! I had to play on my cheerleading coaching there, but kudos to the hubby for this one. My husband has only used one kind of hair product to tame his mane for years but they never ever have coupons for it so we always budget for this. He decided to take it upon himself and write an e-mail to customer relations and explain that he has been using this product since high school but since the price of the item has increased and there are never any coupons for it he is thinking about switching to another product. Not only did the company respond back they sent him enough coupons for the product for the next few years.
Lesson learned, when you find a product that you really enjoy using and/or that really works for you, don't settle. Be aggressive and ask the company for coupons for this product so that you can continue to use your favorite product.

Red Hot Recipe: Caramel Mocha

My husband and I just love our caramel coffee. We recently were at a Bob Evan's and I ordered a Caramel Mocha that was absolutely delicious! So, I was bound and determined to make one on my own at home (it's about time!) I asked the waitress how they made theirs and she said they use "hot chocolate." So, I played around with hot chocolate and coffee and perfected this Caramel Mocha recipe.

Ingredients:

4 oz. of regular coffee
4 oz. of sweetened hot chocolate mix (when prepared, if unsweetened add 1-2 tsp. of sugar or sugar substitute)
Whipped Cream
2 T. Caramel Syrup (I use Smucker's)
2 T. Milk Chocolate Syrup (I use Hershey's)

Brew coffee as you normally would in your coffee pot. Place sweetened hot chocolate in bottom of coffee cup and pour hot coffee into cup leaving enough room for whipped cream on top. Garnish with whipped cream and drizzle both syrups in zig-zag pattern on top. Enjoy!

This year was the year that I bought my first wrinkle cream, ugh, cringe! Those terrible lines appeared on my forehead. A true sign of wisdom, right? So here are a few make-up tricks to keep those little pesky lines at bay:

Mix your foundation with a light base of SPF 15 Day Moisturizer. I love Burts Bees Radiance Day Lotion or even better Clinique's Tinted Moisturizer with SPF. The protection against sun damage (which causes more wrinkles) is great and the extra moisture helps the foundation go on smoothly and evenly and stay out of wrinkle lines.
Highlight and illuminate. Try foundations that have words like radiance, illuminate, brilliance or luminous. They tend to hide flaws better because they have a hint of shimmer or bronzer! Or you can just add a little to your regular foundation - be careful not to add to much though. You don't want to look like a disco ball.
Stick with neutral shades of powder eye shadow. Powder stays on and does not crease unlike cream shadows which can draw attention. Line under your eyes with highlighter. Nothing says youth like baby blues.
Think baby pink... lips! Try pink gloss or lip balm. Don't line your lips with a real dark border, this draws attention to any lines around the mouth, instead dab any color you wish on the middle of your lips with your finger and blot.
Use cream blush on the apples of your cheeks, because unlike powder they don't sit in fine lines and wrinkles.
Smudge your eye-liner slightly upward in the outer corners of your top eye-lids with a Q-Tip . Wa-la, instant eye lift!

One of my biggest pet peeves is an organized home. Why? Well because it makes life easier when you know where everything is at. I had tried everything to organize my medicine cabinet, from a lazy suzan to risers, nothing worked for all those bottles and various other items. My cabinet still was is disarray! I came across Swivel Stores and decided to give them a try. No bigger than a cereal box and they can hold up to 24 bottles, AMAZING! I bought two and anxiously brought them home and got to work. In 20 minutes, I had an organized cabinet with plenty of room to spare.

Cons:

They are a little flimsy on the plastic.

They are a little pricey - $19.99/organizer if bought in a store, or BOGO on TV + additional $13 for process and handling.

Pros:

They do what they are supposed to do. They really store 24 bottles and take up only as much room as a cereal box.
I have organized cabinet!

Overall: I would totally recommend them and save your money on all those other means that do not work. The risers you have to stack and items tumble and don't bother with the lazy suzan's items get lost in the middle. Even my grandmother has transformed her spice cabinet and medicine cabinet with Swivel Stores!

Red Hot Recipe: Shepard's Pie

My family just came to visit me last week, and the one thing that bonds us together is... good food. The kitchen always is the gathering place. It is the place were we all mingle, laugh, share stories and make new memories. So, I decided to make a few dishes for my family and I picked one that I have mastered (or at least I think I have mastered) within the past couple of years, so here is my take on a classic... Shepard's Pie.

Ingredients:

5lb. bag of all purpose potatoes (cooked and mashed as you like)
1lb. of ground beef or lamb (I use 80/20 ground beef but I have heard of using lamb.)
Cooking Spray (like Pam)
2 - 8oz. cans of whole kernel sweet corn or frozen corn.
1and1/2 cups of mild shredded cheese
1 medium, sweet white onion (diced)
French's French Fried Onions
Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 8 x 8 glass casserole dish with cooking spray (Pam.) Cook and mash your potatoes as you normally would. I have (on a workday substituted the instant mashed potatoes and it turned out just fine.) Brown and drain the ground beef and diced onion on the stove in a skillet until almost all the way done (just make sure all the pink is out and no longer because it will cook in the oven too!) Line the casserole dish with the beef, then open and drain the cans of corn pour on top of the beef. Then put mashed potatoes over top of the corn (making layers, do not mix.) Spread on top shredded cheese. Bake in oven for 25 minutes. Remove from oven place fried onions on top, place bake in oven for another 7-10 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes, then serve and enjoy! Serves about 6 people.

I do apologize that I have not been on here for a while. I have been a little under the weather. Since, I was twelve years old I have been preparing Thanksgiving dinner and I have learned a few tricks along the way that I have decided to share with you all in order to make your holiday a little easier.

* Prepare all you can in advance. Pies, cakes, cookies and even side dishes can be prepared as early as two days before you plan on having dinner. Prep everything you can (chop your celery, mix your fixings, etc...) It will save you a TON of time and stress on Turkey Day!

* Shop early, too. Don't wait until the last minute to do your shopping. The grocery store usually runs out of what you need and the hike up prices.

* Turkey 101: You need a turkey for 1.5lbs times as many people you are planning to feed. Or you can round up 2lbs/person. A turkey needs to thaw (in the bottom of your refrigerator) 13 hours/5lbs of turkey. Rinse the turkey off very, very well before cooking and don't forget to get the giblets out of the neck (let simmer on low in saucepan for gravy) before cooking. To keep your turkey moist, I always rub mine with a stick of butter and place in a basting bag before cooking. On average a 13lb turkey will have to cook about 4-5 hours. So, you'll be getting up early on Thanksgiving!

* Remember, make your mashed potatoes last along with your rolls (they cool the quickest.)The warmers serving platters are nice for sides. Pies and cakes can be warmed up during dinner.

* Always have snack foods for your guests to snack on otherwise they'll bother you all day in the kitchen. I always put out a cheese ball with crackers, meat, fruit, chips, something for them to snack on because by lunch time they can smell the turkey and they start to get hungry and they all make their way into the kitchen.

* Prepare for the worst. A good host will be prepared. Have paper towels, napkins, silverware, all purpose spray handy because something always gets spilled and a good host is always prepared.

* Avoid the drama and have a good time. The holidays are a special time and don't have to be stressful. Enjoy this day too!

Red Hot Recipe: Pumpkin Spice Latte

I just love Starbucks and their Pumpkin Spice Latte this time of year but I don't like paying $4 each time I want one. So thanks to Copycat Recipes for this recipe so I can make them at home.

Pumpkin Spice Latte:
Yields: 1-2 servings

Ingredients:
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin OR 1 teaspoon of Torani Pumpkin Spice Syrup (your choice)
2 tablespoons sugar or sugar substitute - you can halve this amount
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1-2 shots espresso (about 1/4 cup of espresso or 1/2 cup of strong brewed coffee if you don't have an espresso machine.)

Directions:
In a saucepan combine milk, pumpkin and sugar and cook on medium heat, stirring, until steaming. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and spice, transfer to a blender and process for 15 seconds until foamy. If you don't have a blender, don't worry about it - just whisk the mixture really well with a wire whisk.

Pour into a large mug or two mugs. Add the espresso on top.

Optional: Top with whipped cream and sprinkle pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, or cinnamon on top.

Yummy!

Red Hot Recipe: Pumpkin Cheesecake

Happy September Everyone! Ok, so I might be jumping the gun a little here but autumn is my absolute favorite time of year. One reason, is because I love...LOVE pumpkin. The smell and taste of it. So here's one of my favorite fall recipes.

Ingredients:

1 T. cinnamon
1 t. allspice
1 egg white
3/4 c. canned evaporated milk
1 T. vegetable oil
1 T. vanilla extract
1/3 c. graham cracker crumbs
1 can (16 oz.) solid pack pumpkin
2 c. low fat ricotta cheese
3/4 c. sugar
3 T. all purpose flour
1 T. non-fat dry milk powder

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Spray 9" spring form pan with non-stick cooking spray. Add graham cracker crumbs, shake to coat pan evenly. Set aside.
Combine - pumpkin and ricotta cheese until smooth. Add sugar, flour, milk, cinnamon, allspice, milk powder, egg white, evaporated milk, oil and vanilla. Blend until creamy and smooth. Pour mixture into prepared baking pan. Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 275 degrees F, then bake 1 hour and 15 minutes.

After baking, turn off oven heat but leave cheesecake on wire rack with oven door cracked for an hour. Remove from oven and let cool completely. Cover and refridgerate before serving.

Pay attention to the seasons. You can always find better deals after the holidays. So, if it can wait... wait. I believe I mentioned this before but,shop all year round for those birthdays and Christmas presents. Keep a designated place in your spare closet for them and keep a list on your phone or in your purse. Don't double buy for people. If it's not a necessity, it's not on sale or you don't have a coupon for it... don't buy it. It's that simple!

Amanda’s Advice - Beat the Heat

With millions of Americans affected by the heat wave this week, the nurse in me said to blog about staying safe in the sizzle.

* Stay Cool: Plan activities indoors where there is air conditioning. I understand that the pool sounds like a great place to cool off but be aware of staying out too long. If you do plan a day trip, only stay out for 45 minutes at a time then allow the body to cool down for at least 15 minutes before returning back outside.

- Hyperthermia and heat stroke occurs when the temperatures are scorching and its onset happens rapidly. Keep a spritz bottle full of water near by to spray in an emergency.

* Hydrate: Fluids, Fluids, Fluids! During temperatures like these, women need at least 64 oz. of water and men need 80 oz. in order to prevent dehydration that can occur more rapidly because of the increase in the loss of fluids in sweat.

- If you are leaving the house: don’t forget to pack your drinks for the road. Remember, if the body is sweating it is working harder therefore it may need more fuel to function, pack a few snacks for a quick afternoon protein punch as well.

- Look for other sources of water. Lemonade, popsicles, fruit, etc... although, minimal still help contribute and can really add up to increase overall fluid intake.

* Check on the elderly : This is crucial. Call or check on your older loved ones and neighbors. They tend to be the first age group seriously affected by extreme weather conditions and their bodies react the most drastically to these environmental changes.

- Schedule plenty of needed naps and breaks for activities and simple tasks. They may require more time and attention to get the job done. The added stress on the body causes weakness.

* Clothing Check : If you must leave the house, wear appropriate attire for the weather. Lighters colors tend to be better because darker colors attract more light. Have self confidence – don’t wear long jeans or pants. The body needs to breathe to cool off. Roll them up and pull out the shorts/capris… I promise you look fabulous!

- Flip flop it: There’s a reason why we wear them in the summer. Here it is: as the sweat on your feet evaporates, it cools the skin and the blood in your feet. Blood vessels then push that blood to other parts of the body, so "you're getting a greater sensation of coolness," says Donald R. Bohay, M.D., a member of the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society. I love my flip flops even more!

- Don’t forget about your head. Your scalp can get sun burned too! Do a Miss Daisy and wear a floppy hat, ball cap or bandana it, whichever you prefer- just cover it. Don’t have a hat? Grab your umbrella instead.

* Wear Sunblock: Protect your beautiful skin from harmful rays and premature wrinkles with SPF 55. Make sure to reapply at least every four hours because you are sweating. For my Hubby -

My husband started a new TOD last week and he is not used to the new schedule of long, twelve hour days. As a nurse, I am quite familiar with these never-ending days and how to survive them, so I thought I would spread the advice.

* Go to bed early. Remember, the average person needs 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Since you are getting up earlier and your days are lasting longer - you need to go to bed earlier, it's that simple. Take a hot bath before bed and spray lavender on your linens or use lavender lotion. It promotes relaxation. Yes, adults have bed times too!

* Speaking of sleep, catch up on R&R whenever you can. 20 minute power naps really do help and sleep in on the weekends. Bonus, your Hubby will love the extra cuddle time!

* Crock It. By the time you get home you don't feel like cooking. Use your crock pot during the week so that you are not tempted to use fast food as the substitute. * Wear supportive attire. Good shoes and breathable clothes are a must if you're going to be working all day. Trust me, your feet will thank you later.

* Stay well fed and hydrated. Since you are working harder and longer your body needs more nutrition in order to keep up with the demand. Pack 2 protein rich snacks and one solid lunch to consume at work. Especially if you are going to be out in the hot sun, take a water bottle or extra Gatorade.

* Stay Connected. It's easy to slump into workaholic during 12 hour days. To avoid all work and no play, make sure to make time for your children and stay connected with your husband all day via text messages, e-mail and phone calls. Anything that can wait until the weekend needs to wait. I'm not promoting procrastination, but prioritization.

Even though long days are no fun, you will survive them - I promise!

Grandma's Goodies: Hair Care

Ever had a bad hair day? Haven't we all. Well these old-fashioned Grandma tricks will tame the mane.

* To strengthen your hair - Egg Shampoo: Beat 2 eggs in a cup of warm water. Massage the mixture into wet hair. Leave on for 5-10 minutes and then rinse. Don't use hot water to rinse, you wouldn't want the eggs to scramble, haha!

* To thicken hair - Add a tablespoon of powdered gelatin to your shampoo.

* For more shine/lighten - 1/4 cup lemon juice in 1/2 cup of water for blondes. 1/4 cup vinegar instead of lemon juice for brunettes.

* Lighten (continue) - Brew a cup of chamomile tea. Let it cool. Spray or comb into dry hair. Leave on for 20 minutes then shampoo out.

* To condition hair - Mix 1 egg, 1 tsp. of honey and 2 tsp. of olive oil. Apply to wet hair and cover with a shower cap or towel. Leave on for at least 30 minutes before shampooing out.

* Condition (continue) - Use plain yogurt as your conditioner. Leave on for 20 minutes then rinse out.

* To nourish hair - Mash up an over ripe avocado and blend through dry hair. Leave on for 30 minutes then shampoo out.

* For Hot Oil TX - Mix 1 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup butter. Microwave for one minute on half power. Leave on 20 minutes then shampoo out.

* For Dry Hair - Mix 1 tablespoon honey to your shampoo.

* For Dandruff - Add Vitamin E capsules to your shampoo. To get rid of them STAT, use Aloe Vera Gel. Apply all over your head, let sit for 5 minutes then rinse it out.

My Advice for this topic:

* Be aware of any allergies. Your hair is still part of YOU.

* Use caution with hot products, of course.

It's amazing how everything really does start in the kitchen!

Red Hot Recipe

I love the summer. Not just because of swimming, barbeques and time off from school. These mini strawberry shortcakes are yummy in the tummy (plus, it's a way to get the kiddies to eat some fruit!)

* Fresh Strawberries
* 1 T. of sugar or splenda
* Package of shortcakes or sub. angel food cake
* Cool Whip
* Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
* Strawberry Glaze
* Optional - Chopped Pecans

Directions:

Wash and drain strawberries. Cut up strawberries in slices and dispose of the stems. In cereal bowels, place shortcakes and drizzle with strawberry glaze. Place freshly sliced strawberries on top of shortcakes and sprinkle with sugar. Place one scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top, then follow with cool whip and pecans. Serve and enjoy!

In less than five minutes, you have dessert!

My advice for this topic:

Add extra fruit for more flavor. Blueberries and raspberries really make this over the top delicious.

If you are looking to cut back on your sugar intake: substitute sugar with splenda or sweet and low and purchase no sugar added angel food cake and vanilla yogurt.

Make sure to prepare and eat in a location that you don't mind to get stained. The glaze is red and tends to stain.

My advice for this topic:

I give all the women in my family Bath and Body Works for Christmas. I'm one of those practical gift givers. This is the time that I buy their presents. I bought my sister and sister in law lotion, shower gel and body spray (originally $10.50/each) for $4/each. That's over a 50% savings each year. I also buy their stocking stuffers at half price, lip gloss and the new mini candles are fabulous!

Also, stock up. You never know when there's going to be an unexpected gift exchange at work or school or someone's birthday (that you somehow forgot in your busy schedule.) It's always nice to have a few items in a closet for these cases.

From Trash to Treasure: Yard Sales 101

The Zenni Family First Annual Yard Sale was a huge success! We made over $200 by selling our old clothes, games, home decor and furniture.

Our yard sale leftovers are boxed up and scheduled for Purple Heart to pick up next week. Schedule your junk pick up at www.purpleheart.org and help disabled veterans and their dependents.

Even after the yard sale, we continued to sell our high price items on Craigslist and Sargeslist adding to our profit. To advertise your items go to: www.craigslist.com or use the military only site: www.sargeslist.com

My advice for this topic:

I recommend spring cleaning in early May and having a yard sale in June or July every year.

Organize for your yard sale during spring cleaning. Use three bins clearly labeled as: "Donate," "Sell" and "Keep." This makes gathering your items to sell and donate much easier than having to sort through them later.

Hot Items For Yard Sales:

* Baby Items
* Electronics
* Collectibles
* Antiques
* Books
* Movies/DVD's
* Appliances (especially kitchen)
* Clothes

Plan your yard sale around pay days. The first of the month or the 15th of the month. Steer away from holiday weekends like Memorial Day and Independence Day. People usually already have plans for these busy weekends.

Try and let people name their price. Everything is negotiable. Don't give your items away, but be reasonable in an economy like this one. If you have three of some item and somebody wants all three, do like a discount store and sell them cheaper or buy two, get the third free. You'll gain rapport and they'll be willing to buy more.

Offer your neighbors the opportunity to sell some items. It makes the yard sale even larger and adds to the advertising: "Multi-family or Neighborhood."

Speaking of advertising: Post your Yard Sale on the above mentioned web sites: Craigslist and Sargeslist on the Friday before your sale. Numerous hard core yard salers plan their weekend trips on Friday night. Post signs on both the entrance and exits of your subdivision (if allowed.)

Remember, people usually work until 5pm (even on the weekends) so keep your yard sale open at least until 6pm to make sure to get those after-work buyers. Don't forget about putting things out early on Sunday between 9-10AM so that after church people can stop in for a quick trip.

Make sure you group like items together when you put out your items. Glassware goes with glassware and clothes with clothes. This makes it look more organized and allows shoppers to browse easily to the sections of items that they want.

If it's hot (like June or July) think about buying in bulk bottled water or juice. 6 pack of water bottles = $2.89. Selling water for $1/bottle = $6. You just made your money back + $3.11!

While speaking of staying hydrated, the nurse in me is screaming... don't forget the sunblock. Try to wear at least SPF 55 during your yard sale to protect your beautiful skin from those harmful rays. Don't forget about the kiddies/husbands too!
